With the installation of solar heaters for its workers’ showers, Iquique Terminal International goes for environmental protection and energy saving.
As explained by Jorge Oyarce, this heating energy technology was chosen because it’s completely environmentally friendly and clean which it is consistent to the concept of "Green Port" which our port wants to achieve.
ITI’s CEO Fernando Ugarte noted dual benefits of implementing a system that contributes to energy saving, and also allows workers to familiarize with renewable energy that is the current trend. In addition, the ideal climatic conditions of our region makes imperative not to overlook this abundant resource.
The system used is called Heat Pipe, which is the most advanced technology available to convert solar energy into heat through the use of boron-silicate vacuum tubes.
These tubes absorb about 94% of solar radiation, storing it for long periods of time, and turning it into heat energy which then it is transferred to water.
