The largest ship ever to arrive in Chile docks in Iquique

Date: May 2010

Today it marked a historic moment for the port of Iquique that welcomed the world's largest motor vessel to arrive to Chile. The MV Botswana belongs to Mediterranean Shipping Company MSC.

The Liberian flagged ship coming from the port of Callao has a length of 300 meters (length) and 40 meters of breadth (W). It has a capacity close to 6,500 TEUs.

The ship docked at site berth 4 of Iquique Terminal Internacional. This is a new generation ship that lacks its own cranes to maximize cargo.

At that terminal, precisely, works that allowed the extension of the docking site were recently completed. That project required an investment of approximately USD$ 10 million.

ITI’s CEO, Fernando Ugarte, stated that the company has focused on these projects for the mid and long term despite the fall in transactions last year, resulting from the crisis and the restrictions imposed by Bolivia on car imports. Nevertheless, the company decided to make this important investment that allows the berthing of new generation vessels.

The operations performed in Iquique terminal consisted of loading and unloading of a total of 696 containers, according to Management Chief, Jorge Oyarce.
