For 24 hours was called in the front of Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI), the ship "MSC INES" Mexican nationality, considered one of the largest ships in tonnage received in the port of Iquique. The Post Panamax vessel type, has a cargo capacity of 9100 containers. The ship has a length of 349 meters long (length) by 42 wide and with a capacity of loading up to 107.551 tonnes.
The MSC Ines is a ship built in 2006 and arrived to the local port, at ITI’s berthing site from the Peruvian port of Callao. The ship's captain in charge, born in Croatia, Mr. Skero Doraf, covers the route called "Andes" that runs the ports of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Pusan, Yokohama, Manzanillo, Balboa, Iquique and San Antonio.
The MSC Ines arrived to the port past 13:00 hours, beginning operations of loading and unloading containers for 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon, Maritime Authorities, Empresa Portuaria Iquique authorities were received on board the ship by its captain Skero Doraf.
Fernando Ugarte, ITI’s General Manager, gave a present to the captain of the ship as a souvenir of their passage through the port Iquique.
The importance for ITI, is that it is the largest ship of its kind that has arrived at Iquique port, and there was a previous work with the maritime authority. This allows that this kind of vessels arrives at Iquique, because if not they would have jump this port, making it more difficult to receiving large ships from other companies in the future, "said Fernando Ugarte, general manager of ITI.
Alfredo Montiglio, Economy Seremi (s) indicated that Iquique is no longer a free zone, but a logistics platform that distributes goods to all continent ".
"With the investments that are being made in this port, it will be able to receive larger ships, so we are very happy for the economy of the region. This union between shipping companies, port, Zofri, allows us to continue with good jobs figures and good economy for future years. " Montiglio said.
The next destinations for MSC Ines, who has only 24 crew, is the port of San Antonio in the region of Valparaíso.
