Considering an investment of four billion dollars, the regional council approved the project ""depth dredging of berth site N°4 of Iquique Port"" presented by the company Iquique Terminal Internacional S.A., which aim is to improve existing facilities and receive larger vessels.
With this initiative it will be increased the depth dredging of the Iquique port’s pool, in front of the site mentioned, considering to reach fourteen meters deep from the access area to the berthing site.
Regarding the area of material’s dumping, which is located opposite the port at an approximate distance of 10 km in northeast direction of the project area, the average depth would reach to 272 meters.
This subject also includes the execution of topographic setting out, site’s dredging, the transport and dumping of dredged material, plus a contingency plan and an environmental monitoring plan and a monitoring program of sea lions, to ensure that are not affected while the project is being executed.
