Cargo Mobilized At Tarapaca Ports Fell 57%

In August the regular cargo mobilized at ports of Tarapacá region reached 504,990 tons, showing a decrease of 57% from the same month last year, resulting in a decrease of 668,660 tons a year, due to lower demand from abroad, and constant swells occurred during the month, which forced the closure of some ports in the region. In short, the decline is explained by the annual decline in exports, imports, transit cargo, transshipment and re-stows, unlike coastal trade, which grew in twelve months during August.

As highlighted item, the National Statistics Institute (INE) explained that the cargo loaded and unloaded recorded 481,833 tons (95.4 percent of total mobilized), resulting in a decrease of 57.8 percent , about 660,740 tons less than in August 2011.
Exports reached 328,770 tons (65.1 percent of total mobilized) decreasing annually to 64.7 percent, which means 601,810 tonnes a year. While imports recorded 113,530 tons (22.5 percent of the total moved), resulting in a low of 34.6 percent in twelve months, corresponding to 59 990 tonnes lower than imported in August last year.

Cargo moved
The cargo handled by transit to third was twelve thousand 132 tons, 2.4 percent of the total cargo moved, decreasing in 1190 compared to the same month of 2011, that is nine percent less.

The cargo moved by handling services was 23,160 tons, reaching 4.6 percent of the total cargo moved in August, showing a contraction of 25.5 percent over the same month last year.

Of cargo handled in August, 99.4 percent were re-stows, about 23,010 tons of cargo, down 24.4 percent in twelve months, ie about 7440 tonnes. Instead, handling by concept of transshipment decreased 76.5 percent over a year, about 476 tonnes, reaching 146 tons.

CUMULATIVE TOTAL
From January to August, the cargo handled was 6.73 million tons, a decrease of 12.1 percent from the same period in 2011. The tons moved up to the eighth month due to loading and unloading totaled 6.56 million tons, registering a cumulative negative variation of 12.4 percent over the same period last year. Meanwhile, the cargo handled between January to August fell slightly by 0.6 percent over the same period of 2011.

The cargo moved by transit concept was a cumulative of 70,560 tons, showing a decrease of 29.8 percent from the same period in 2011.
