Study Highlights The Port Of Iquique As An Alternative For Bolivian Cargo

Date: 2012/10/05

Among conclusions showed by the study done by the National Brokers Bolivia, the Institute of Foreign Trade and Customs and State University San Andres, said the following: "Iquique is an excellent alternative for Bolivian cargo such as export and import, currently has advantages according to a series of indicators, including the land route and the large number of shipping companies operating in ITI, which is the concession terminal of Iquique in that region."

The study also warns that although it is necessary to clear up some barriers to foreign ministry level to eliminate minor problems that remain.

"The costs for containers at the Port of Iquique are more convenient than the port of Arica.

The supply of shipping companies for the port of Iquique to Asia is larger, and cargo loaded in Iquique usually does not have intermediate transshipment ports so transit times are reduced and freight costs that can be achieved are cheaper than flow to Asia from Arica "notes the study.

One of the most important aspects that changes the scenario from previous years is related to the excellent state that today presents Huara –Oruro route, with an almost straight path paved with high quality standards, which allow carriers to save operational costs. Nevertheless it is required to publicize the current state of the route, because there is ignorance about it.

The study also points out that foreign trade operators of the neighboring country must consider the total cost of cargo transfer at Iquique. Adding road transport, port costs and shorter waiting times for the large number of shipping companies existing in the city, these points make of Iquique a great choice for Bolivian cargo. Thus foreign trade operators in the country could save up to $ 300 per container and up to 20 days in the arrival of the cargo at destination.

Currently eastern Bolivia formed by Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Cochabamba represent the biggest export center of the country. Soy and its derivatives are the main exports, over 60% of what the country sends abroad. A significant percentage of these cargoes are sent via Arica, however operators warn problems such as waiting times for loading cargo.

"This situation is added to what happens with the Bolivian export cargo at port, suffering delays in its preparation for loading. This also affects the availability of space in the shipping companies that provide the service from this port, "says the study.

With regard to this matter, commercial manager of Iquique Terminal Internacional, Jorge Dumont said that the report reflects the current reality and the Port of Iquique is a real and efficient alternative for Bolivian cargo.
