Swell in Front of Coast of Iquique

In front of coast of Iquique bathed by the Pacific Ocean, once again and due to weather phenomenon of wind, Port Authority ordered the closure of the key structure of support to local economy. Weather events affecting port closures are winds and swell coming from the southeast, indicated the Port of Iquique Captain, Daniel Gonzalez.

So far this year considering the August 20 announcement of port closure, six events, which in total represent a port close equivalent to 15 days. As of 2011, 21 events that occurred which resulted in 40 days of closed port. Only events with reference to weather phenomenon, without considering closures or blockages product of social problems, which this year has not been presented. As reported by Gonzalez.

While the action of closing the port affects the entire activities of coastline, either recreational or economic, this action is aimed to safeguarding the lives of people, emphasized the Port of Iquique captain.

The decision making is not capricious but is based on predictable technical conditions and a measurement instrument called tide gage, which is currently installed in the site No. 4 of Iquique Terminal Internacional SA. Furthermore, their measurements are public and online. And most importantly, is performed according to reports security of the port companies themselves said.
