Port of Iquique query entered to TDLC query with reference to the bidding of Terminal 1

On Monday January 28th entered to the Court of Defense of Free Competition, the query issued by Port of Iquique with reference to the bidding of Terminal 1 "Molo" Port of Iquique.

This query is translated into a series of documents and annexes, and consider the main features of this bidding process, as the rules of integration and polynomial award.

Meanwhile the court, after analyzing the documents, deliver competitive parameters necessary to ensure that bidding process is set to free competition. In addition, the company will call the actors involved to port area and logistics in the region, to provide their point of views.

On this issue, the General Manager of Port of Iquique, Alfredo Leiton, said: With this landmark, it starts the process of public bidding and we trust that it will bring more competition to the industry.

"With this presentation we have formally begun the public process of the bidding of Terminal 1 "Molo", which is extremely important for the strategic objectives the company has been raised as to port competition will bring to the region," said .

Historical Background

In 2000, Empresa Portuaria Iquique concessioned to Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) Terminal 2 "Breakwater" and the respective support areas of the Port of Iquique.

This concession, first given in 20 years and later extended another 10, allowed a significant investment in infrastructure and technology, which positioned the port of Iquique as leader in container cargo in the northern part of our country.

Currently, the port of Iquique transfers 2.7 million tonnes a year, more than double what it was moved in 1999 (1.1 million), a year before the beginning of activities of the concessionaire.

Future projections

A demand study conducted by the port company in 2011, projected the growth rate in the annual cargo flow around 6%, so that, by 2025, the port of Iquique will transfer 5.6 million tonnes per year, more than double what is currently mobilized.
